INTRODUCTION

This is due to the nature and characteristics of high-density fibreboard such as density, surface absorption, bending strength, modulus of elasticity, and internal bond.

What is High-Density Fiberboard?

High-Density Fibreboard is also known as hardboard. It is a type of fibreboard (an engineered wood product) widely used in furnishing and construction. They are usually made from exploded wood fibre that is highly compressed.

HDF is similar to particle board and Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) in physical appearance, although there are differences in their properties. HDF is stronger and denser than MDF. It is also doesn’t require additional materials for the bonding of the wood fibres like particle board.

Properties of High-Density Fibreboard

  • The density of hardboard is 31 pounds per cubic foot (500 kg/m3) or more.
  • It is usually about 50–65 pounds per cubic foot (800–1,040 kg/m3).
  • It is homogenous with no grain
  • It has a specific gravity of between 0.85 and 1.2

Uses of High-Density Fibreboard

High-Density Fibreboard is widely used in construction, flooring, furniture, home appliances, automobiles, and cabinetry, and is popular among acrylic and oil painters as a painting surface due to its economical price. Here are some specific examples of how it is used.

  • It is used as an ideal substrate for pegboard and hardboard panels for store fixtures.
  • It is used for P.O.P. displays.
  • It is also used as the final layer in many skateboard ramps and the half-pipe.

To increase the water resistance, impact resistance, hardness, rigidity and tensile strength of hardboard, a thin film of linseed oil is coated on the surface to form tempered hardboard. This is used in construction siding.

History of High-Density Fibreboard

HDF was discovered by William Mason in 1925. William was trying to look for a use for the huge pile of sawdust that was produced in the sawmills. William attempted to press wood fibre into an isolation board but ended up producing a durable thin sheet after forgetting to shut down the equipment. 

How High-Density Fibreboard is made

There are two methods of producing High-Density Fibreboard; wet process and dry process. The wet process, known as the Mason Method, leaves only one smooth side while the dry processed hardboard is smooth on both sides.

The raw materials need to produce HDF varies from wood chips, shavings, and sawdust to waste paper, corn silk, and even bagasse (sugar fibres). These days innovation in press technology, and panel sanding techniques have improved the quality of fiberboard. Here are the main process of producing HDF.

Wood Preparation: This involves selection of raw material and separation of unwanted materials.

Curing and pressing: Here, resins are added to control the formaldehyde tolerances in the mixture. Fibres are compresses to produce uniform thickness.

Panel Sanding: Here panels are sanded using belts coated with abrasives

Finishing: Here, the panel undergoes various finishing before the final product.

How to clean and maintain High-Density Fibreboard Furniture

  • Wipe HDF with a soft damp cloth with soapy water and wipe the surface with a dry cloth. 
  • Do not use abrasive papers, acids, solvents, thinners, methylated spirits, bleach, or any other strong cleaners to clean HDF.
  • Do not expose HDF to high levels of heat, moisture, steam, or humidity.

  • It is cheaper than wood.
  • It is very easy to cut and make joints.

  • It is a stable product (little or no seasonal movement).

CONS

  • It is easily affected by water.
  • It has a short lifespan of about 10 -15 years compared to solid wood which can last up to a lifetime.
